Wednesday watching during nature excursions: walking 5 miles.

~Mom & Dad visiting: day 4~

Another early morning, as we left around 7:30 again to get to Volcán Poás to see the crater. It was a beautifully clear day! We hiked up to see the second laguna (lake in a crater), taking several great photos and conversing with the First Aid crew that was up there. Nice days=more visitors! Some school children practiced their English when they interviewed Mom about her visit to CR and the volcano.
Volcán Poás... on a clear, warm day with just enough breeze
to waft the sulfuric smell through the air!
Poor man's umbrella leaves at Poás!
The upper laguna at Poás,
where a kindly Red Cross emergency services man took our photo.
Dad's not very good at creative posing...
in the forests at Poás.
From Poás, we continued our drive up to the Peace Waterfall Gardens (Jardínes de las Catáratas de la Paz), where we spent the afternoon amongst mariposas (butterflies), pájaros (birds), colíbries (hummingbirds), serpientes (snakes), monos (monkeys), y gatos grandes (and large felines, such as jaguars, mountain lions, and ocelots).
On the drive further up the mountain region of Poás--
the Valle Central (Central Valley) behind and below.
Birds up close!

Traditional ox cart (carreta) at the Waterfall Gardens.
He let us get in the cart to take the photo!
What a ham. This one loved the camera.
A mini brawl broke out between the two.
(She was PMSing most likely.)
Rowr!
Cute sloths doing what they do best... sleeping!
We also explored the historical sites and had a great buffet lunch there. It's definitely best to visit during a week day. It was so peaceful and not many other tourists around! We ventured up to explore the waterfalls and then drove back the (shorter) back route to Barva on the return trip to San Rafael.

The map.
Waterfall #1.
Underneath one of the waterfalls. Getting wet.
Mom and Dad are way out there
on the lookout point under the waterfall.
This is the CR version of a raccoon, a white-nosed coatimundi.
Lots of Poor Man's Umbrellas!
Only got stopped in the winding dirt-roadway of the mountain pass once due to construction, and I batted my eyes out of that one, not waiting for more than five minutes before the construction workers opened the road up for us to pass! (Gracias al machísmo!)

That night, I took Mom and Dad to this restaurant,
open ONLY Wednesdays-Sundays.
It is a traditional restaurant that serves super yummy comida típica (typical food)
and has beautiful artwork that decorate its walls and rafters!
